Why DIY Oil Changes Make Sense for Mustang Owners

The 5.0L Coyote V8 is a precision performance engine that deserves quality oil and consistent change intervals. Doing it yourself gives you complete control over the oil spec you're using, confirmation that it actually got done, and the satisfaction of working on your own car. Once you've done it once, the process takes under an hour.

What You'll Need

Materials

  • Engine oil: 5W-20 full synthetic (Ford's specification for most Coyote engines — always confirm in your owner's manual for your specific model year)
  • Quantity: 8 quarts for the 5.0L Coyote
  • Oil filter: Ford Motorcraft FL-500-S (or equivalent high-quality aftermarket)
  • Drain plug washer: Replace it every time — Ford uses a crush washer

Tools

  • Floor jack and two jack stands (or drive-up ramps)
  • Oil drain pan (at least 10-quart capacity)
  • 15mm socket or wrench for the drain plug
  • Oil filter wrench (cap-style, 74mm for most Coyote filters)
  • Funnel
  • Nitrile gloves and rags
  • Torque wrench (recommended)

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Warm up the engine briefly. Run it for 2–3 minutes. Warm oil drains faster and carries more contaminants with it. Don't run it to full operating temperature — you don't want to burn yourself.
  2. Safely lift and support the car. Use a proper floor jack at the front jack points (check your owner's manual), then place jack stands under the frame rails. Never work under a car supported only by a floor jack.
  3. Locate and remove the drain plug. The drain plug is on the bottom of the oil pan. Position your drain pan underneath, then loosen the plug counterclockwise with a 15mm socket. Finish removing it by hand — be ready for oil flow.
  4. Let it drain completely. Allow 5–10 minutes for oil to fully drain. While waiting, remove the oil fill cap on top of the engine to help it drain faster.
  5. Remove the old oil filter. The Coyote's filter is accessible from below. Use your filter wrench to break it loose, then spin it off by hand. Have a rag handy — it will drip.
  6. Install the new filter. Lightly coat the new filter's rubber gasket with fresh oil, then thread it on by hand until snug. Give it an additional 3/4 turn — do not over-tighten.
  7. Replace the drain plug. Install the new crush washer and thread the drain plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading. Torque to 18–22 ft-lbs — firm but not gorilla-tight.
  8. Lower the car and add oil. Add 7.5 quarts first, then start the engine, let it run for 30 seconds, shut it off, wait 2 minutes, and check the dipstick. Add the remaining oil as needed to reach the full mark.
  9. Check for leaks. With the engine running at idle, look underneath for any seepage around the drain plug or filter.
  10. Reset the oil life monitor. In the instrument cluster menu, navigate to the oil life display and hold the OK button to reset it to 100%.

How Often Should You Change It?

Ford's official recommendation for the Coyote GT with full synthetic oil is every 7,500 to 10,000 miles under normal driving conditions, or when the oil life monitor prompts you. If you track your car regularly or live in a dusty/hot climate, consider shortening that interval to 5,000 miles. The Coyote engine is well-engineered, but consistent maintenance is what keeps it running strong well past 100,000 miles.

A Note on Oil Specification

Ford specifies 5W-20 synthetic for most Coyote applications, but always verify in your owner's manual — the GT350 (Voodoo 5.2L) has different requirements, and some owners in extreme climates opt for a 5W-30. Stick to the specification unless you have a specific, well-researched reason to deviate.
